production schedule update

There are a few things that have changed within my production schedule and therefor I am going to re-update this.

The day I was originally filming my interview was the 6th of November however this was re-arranged to the 13th of November instead. I did this because I wanted to film my content in the order as the sequence I want to edit it in. Through doing this I have also changed the times I am going to be editing and when I am going to record my voice over and insert the music to accompany it. I am also arranging to go into Manchester and do my final bit of filming on the 19th of November. This will make up the final minute of my factual programme piece. After doing all of this , it will be time to upload my factual programme onto my chosen platform which is of course Instagram.

script

I am now in the process of writing my script. This will become the voice over for my factual piece. My script has been pieced together from facts and information that I have found out previously in my secondary research . So far I have discussed what the fashion industry is , how new trends have been introduced and how they have been influenced by fashion icons , influencers and fashion bloggers. I have also mentioned the rise in ecommerce fashion and some facts and statistics about what it is like working in the fashion industry today. and In order to make my documentary engaging and appealing as possible , I have conducted some primary research in order to find out whether they think the information included in my script is appealing and what other information they would like too find out.

The majority of my audience stated that they would be interested in the topics I am discussing in my documentary. Some find fashion interesting and agree that it is never something talked about that often in the media , even though it is all around us. Statistics and facts are seen as a good idea in order to engage my target audience and the topics overall , are good decisions that I have made.

I wanted to know from my audience whether they had any other topics or information that they wanted to find out through watching my documentary. I received a lot of feedback and from this I can consider to talk about other aspects in my script, however I don’t want to go off the topic of careers within the fashion industry. For example some of my audience would like to know about the history of fashion and the fashion trends A-List celebrities have brought into the industry. One of the key pieces of feedback I received was that they would like to see some behind the scenes with a fashion Label , their product design process and how they go about gathering feedback from customers. This is something that is definitely going to be featured in my documentary. My interviewee is someone with their own menswear , retail brand selling clothes at discounted prices. I am going to go behind the scenes , into his warehouse and discuss the aspects of his job that he loves , how he got there and the validation process he went through. This feedback for me has clarified that my interview will be engaging for my audience. Furthermore , it has also given me an additional question to ask my interviewee when the interview takes place.

Here is my first attempt at doing the script for my voice over

Documentary Script

“The Fashion Industry, A multi – million dollar industry that has been around for as long as we can all remember. Decade after decade new trends have been introduced, influenced by pop culture, music and inspiring style icons. We are just as consumed by fashion icons, Instagram influencers and fashion bloggers as we were 60 years ago. From the invention of the sewing machine, to the rise of ecommerce, Fashion is always going to be forward looking and cyclical. But what is it like having a career in the fashion industry today?

Currently around 555’000 people are employed in Fashion, textiles and fashion retail in the United Kingdom. This sub-industry employs 75% with 414’000 people working in the retail of clothing. Owning your own small fashion business, or retail store within fashion, is a goal for many. Young designers rush into setting up a business, attracted by the perceived glamour and fun associated with the industry. But is it as glamourous as it sounds being a small business, amongst many others that are larger, and currently more successful.

Meet Mathew Donaldson, 20 years old and the founder of his own discounted menswear retailer, the wardrobe Outlet.

{INTERVIEW}

Today the fashion industry is a highly reputable , competitive and influential business and peoples commitment to fashion and wanting to work in the industry is still , if not more passionate. Getting your foot in the door of the Fashion industry is extremely daunting and there is certainly a harsh reality to fashion , but once you do , it can reep large rewards. It is an industry perfect for tenacious people who love a challenge. It takes a strong person to survive and you loose friends over samples , but the limits the industry holds , are endless.

analysis of inspirations

To ensure that I have a variety of research to get inspiration for my factual piece, I have looked at a few different fashion related documentaries. I have looked at the content produced , the style of editing , the audio and the way that the documentaries are shot. The documentary that stood out to me the most was a documentary by Tiffany & co called ‘Some style is legendary’. It is a short film capturing the making of the fall 2016 campaign. The documentary takes viewers behind the scenes as Coddington partners with Tiffany to break new creative ground on her first ever brand campaign. This documentary was my favorite because of the style of editing that was used. Although it wasn’t the style I am going for in terms of the content and the type of documentary it is , I aim to edit and shoot my documentary in a similar way.

The shots in this documentary are no longer than 3 seconds long. I think that this is extremely engaging to watch as a viewer and I think that this will be engaging for my target audience in my documentary . When putting together my shot list , I already decided that I wanted the shots of Cathedral street , the stores and inside the stores to be no longer than 3-4 seconds long. I am going to to take inspiration from this style of filming and editing in order to make my documentary engaging. It is clear that the person filming in the documentary is using a hand held camera to which creates a shaky effects. I think that this gives a more personal feel to the documentary.

The documentary does also feature a basic , close up medium shot of an interviewee. We cant see her entire body , but she is certainly close enough to establish a primary connection with the viewers. I want to use this method in my expository documentary again to try and engage with my target audience. Again the shot for this interview is only a few seconds.

Here is another establishing shot of the city. This shot of the city is the style in shots I am looking for when I go to visit Manchester and the stores in and around the city center. This shot is also only 3 seconds long which is what I am aiming for when I am shooting and editing. Some of these shots could potentially be longer when they were done however , editing is how they have been cut short.

I have sent out a quick survey to my target audience featuring a small segment of the documentary to show examples in the styles of editing. I have asked what they think of this editing style and whether it is engaging for an audience.

100% of the people I asked answered yes regarding whether it is engaging for an audience to watch. In terms of the style of editing , the way it is filmed and the fact they are using a handheld camera seems to work when using frequent straight cuts. This builds up pace and generates interest with a variety of shots to illustrate what is going on in terms of the content in the documentary. The style is suitable for the documentary I have analysed. The clips where the camera man is observing and filming the people discussing aspects of their designs , helps to add engagement as the visual side ties in with the audio. When the audience sees the reaction of the people involved in the creative process , this helps to make it interesting for the viewers. I know now certainly that short cuts throughout a film are more engaging for an audience so I am going to apply this inspiration to work of my own.

planning documentation

I am now in the process of creating my shot list. A shot list is important because it shows a step by step breakdown of each shot I am going to take individually. I know exactly what I need to shoot , how long I am shooting it for , the angle I am shooting at and what it is going to accompany the shot. It also helps me break the shots down into separate scenes. It was already decided in my narrative structure planning that the first minute of my documentary is going to be constructed of various different wall paper shots in and around Manchester that are all related too fashion and the fashion industry. To go along side this will be a voice over where I am discussing the facts and information I found out in my previous research about fashion.

In terms of the interview , I am going to be asking my interviewee the series of questions that I put together , also from research in my interview planning. When breaking this down into my shot list , It is clear that some of the answers to the questions I am asking are going to be longer than others. It will then be a case of conducting some primary research and asking which types of shots my audience prefers , what answers they will be most interested in order to engage the audience.

At the end of my documentary , the final shots are going to be of my interviewee to reinforce the positive message I want to get across to my audience. Through showing the success he has had but the fact he is working hard to continue that.

As part of the planning for my documentary , It is important to complete a location recce and risk assessment for each place that I visit to shoot. Here is new cathedral street in Manchester city center. This is a key location for me as it consists of a lot of high end shops that I want to shoot in relation to my voice over.

Here is the location recce for New Cathedral street in Manchester. Within this recce I have assessed the access I have to the location , the noise , parking and the electricity supply. The points of interest for me are the variety of high street shops for me to shoot. This is extremely suitable for me. New Cathedral street in Manchester is a busy high street with lots of people around therefor there will be lots of background noise that will need to be edited out later. Overall the setting is completely safe and suitable for me to film at.

Here is the location recce for Selfridges Department store in Manchester. I have accessed again the accessibility I have to the premises , the availability to film and the suitability. The points of interest for me is that there are various different retail companies within the store and from the outside and in , it is picturesque due to its glass front. However the only issue that arises going to film here is that I may need to ask for permission in order to film inside and get the shots of the clothes and other items in relation to fashion. Again there will be background noise in this location due to the vast amount of people inside and also the music featured in the store itself. This will all have to be edited later.

Before filming in the warehouse , I took some photographs of the location and also completed a recce along with the other locations I was filming at.

Again I assessed the points of interest within the warehouse , whether it was suitable for me to film there. The warehouse was suitable and there was lots of possible shots , however there was a lot of background noise due to other people working there and there was no quite room where we could film. This will have to be reduced when it comes to my edit. There was lots of lifts as the warehouse was quite a few stories high and there was also machinery and boxes all over the warehouse. The purpose of filming in this warehouse for me was so that I could get an insight into what having a small business and where it all begins.

legal and ethical constraints

It is important to consider the legal and ethical constraints when going ahead and creating a film. Wether it be a movie , short film or a documentary.

copy right issues :

Anybody who makes a film can decide who sees it and who copies it. This is of course called copy right , ‘The right to copy’. Copy right not only protects you , but other artists as well. the law protects the artists and their work. It is important when creating my own documentary that for example , the chosen music I use to accompany my voiceover in some parts , I am allowed to use. When making a film it is important to respect copy right of other artists when you want to use their music , video , photographs etc. You must have permission to copy their work. If you ever wanted your film to be seen broadcast on the television , you have to prove to the broadcasters that you own all the rights to every bit of content within your film. If they aren’t originally created , then you need a document to prove you have permission to use and copy it.

Ideally , in order to stay out of trouble , you should create all your content , use content in the public domain if you are including archived footage in something you have created or use content that has been made available through a Creative Commons License. I am not going to be creating my own content therefor it is important I get permission to use music that I choose.

Copy right issues and clearances :

when you make a film everything must be cleared

When you make a film, everything must be cleared.

You must have clearances for all of the following:

Clearances needed
Script
Music
Locations
Contributors
Products
Company Logos

Only when all these things have been cleared can a documentary be legally copied, shared or broadcast on TV or the Internet.

consent forms for people in films

it is important to get permission before filming begins. I need to ensure that the subject of my documentary signs contributor release forms.

Sometimes a good way of doing this is getting people to say that they give permission on a recording.

Children will not be present in my documentary however if they are where , you must always have parental consent for children under 18.

release forms and contracts

  • Talent Release Form – ie Personal Release Form, use this for your interviews.

  • Materials Release Form – Use this form whenever you are including photographs, paintings, sculpture, other artwork, documents or artifacts in your film.

  • Location Release Form – Use this for permission to shoot on private property.

  • Group Release -Use when depicting larger groups, such as a club, athletic team, choir, etc.

  • Extra/Background Release – For people who appear in the background of a shot or scene, but who are not the focal point or subject of the footage in question.

  • Poster Release – This is a poster-size release you should use when filming in public spaces where numerous people may be entering and exiting the frame. Examples: Public Parks, Government Buildings and surrounding areas, Shopping Centers, Malls, Sports arenas, and the like. (Note that location releases may be required for some of these kinds of places)

  • Crew Deal Memo – Use this release for all crew members working on the film. This includes volunteers, Production Assistants, etc., whether in the office, or on-set, who work during any phase of production, from development through post-production

I am going to be filming in somebody’s warehouse therefor it is important that I have proof of a location release form in order to film there. Also due to the fact I am going to be filming in public spaces , I should have a poster release form too.

Location Permissions

before shooting on a private property , getting permission from the owners first is vital. I will need to get a signed location release.

Ambient music

If you are filming inside a restaurant or store and music is playing on the overhead speakers, be aware that if you use it in your film, you will need to get permission. If the music is not important, best case is to get it turned off while you’re shooting or simply edit it out of your movie. I am potentially going to be filming in shops there will probably be music playing , therefor I will edit this out.

Legal Check-List

  • Get Permissions (from interviews & locations)
  • Get Clearances (music, photos, artwork, etc)
  • Check Your Facts
  • Check for Fairness
  • Make Certain of all Ownership

Treatment

WORKING TITLE: Careers in Fashion Documentary

TARGET AUDIENCE: – My target audience is supposedly anyone interested in Fashion or anyone that aspires to have a career in fashion whether they are male or female , ranging from the ages 16 to around 30’s or 40’s. It is also aimed at fashion students , people who won their own businesses and those working in retail. I conducted some primary research with a mixed bunch of people at different age ranges and with different backgrounds , all of them agreed that it is an interesting idea.

SUMMARY OF RESEARCH: I have conducted some different forms of research into different aspects of fashion in order to support my documentary. What is the Fashion industry ? How important are fashion shows within the industry ? How many people are employed in the fashion industry in the UK and how much is the industry making ? what are the top companies on the market ? how has fashion changed over the years in terms of manufacturing , fast fashion , seasonal fashion. There definitely appears to be differences between the expensive fashion shows on the runways in comparison to the mass produced styles sold in shopping centers and online. Fashion shows by the 21st century were a regular part of the fashion calendar and have had huge commercial importance. Currently around 555,000 people are employed in fashion in the UK. Most jobs in the fashion industry are retail related which is my key focus. The top four companies are Burberry , Next , Marks and Spencer and ASOS. Social Media has definitely had a huge part to play on the increase in everyone’s appetite for fashion. Everything is very quickly and easily copied. When fast fashion retailers spot a new trend , they are able to replicate and mass produce the product before the original copy is even online. As part of research , I watched a recent documentary called Breaking Fashion based on a new popular fast fashion brand. It gives people an insight as to how fast and competitive fast fashion can be. The rise in fast fashion has effected the biannual seasonality that has always structured the Fashion industry. The key aim for me and my documentary is to show people that although fashion is so competitive and difficult to get into you can , I will be looking at this from the point of view of a small growing business in Bolton. I have also conducted research into the reception theory developed by Stuart Hall. This Theory asserts that media texts are often encoded and decoded. The dominant and preferred reading method is the approach I want to take as I feel that my target audience will adopt to this method and I want people to be aware you can make it in Fashion.

YOUR PRODUCT:

I am intending on producing an expository style documentary based on careers within the fashion industry. I will be discussing what the fashion industry is as a whole and how many people are working in the fashion industry currently in the UK. I will also discuss how the fashion industry is changing and who are the biggest fashion brands currently. These facts and information will all be constructed into a voice over within the first minute of the documentary. This voice over will be accompanied with 5/6 different shots of locations in and around Manchester. I want my first shot to be of Cathedral Street , I want a natural shot of people walking around it. I then wanted to focus on some specific shots on that street such as Zara , Michael Kors and Burberry. I think these shops have a picturesque look about them and will be perfect to shoot for my documentary. I do plan on hopefully getting some shots of items in stores. I will need to ask for permission from the staff before hand , If so I will shoot clothes , bags etc in some of the designer shops and also on the high street. I am going to discuss large businesses and contrast this to smaller business within the industry. This will then lead into the second part of my documentary which will be focusing on my interviewee. I plan to interview a friend of mine who works in the fashion business but on a smaller scale. I want to know what it is like working in a small business among others who are much bigger. His businesses main focus is buying merchandise and selling it on. In addition to this he his designing his own merchandise. Hopefully I can see some sketches of ideas , visit his warehouse and get an insight as to what it is like behind the scenes. This will include a partial voice over accompanied with establishing shots of the warehouse to introduce what I am going to be showing for the next part of my documentary. The final part of my documentary is going to to be focusing on how fast fashion is rapidly changing fashion and the effect it is having on seasonal , high end fashion. Again this will be accompanied with a voice over made up of the facts and information I have discovered through research. I am going to film billboards in Manchester that feature some of the UK’s biggest fast fashion company’s like pretty little thing , Missguided , In The Style. To conclude my documentary I want to make an emphasis on the fact that although Fashion is a difficult and competitive industry to get into , it is possible. This will be my intended reception from my target audience.

PROPS/RESOURCES/EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS/LOCATIONS/CAST

I am going to need a Canon FX105 Camera , or one similar to film my documentary. I am also going to need a tripod and grip in order to film my wallpaper shots around Manchester. When carrying out my interview I am thinking of using lighting and a possible backdrop. I am taking this idea from my analysis of a recent documentary on fashion as well. The current locations I will be filming at are Manchester City Centre , Cathedral street , The Arndale ? The Trafford center. I am also visiting the warehouse of my interviewee who works in the fashion industry.

OUTLINED PROJECT SCHEDULE

I am going to be conducting research throughout the documentary. The initial primary and secondary research as part of the planning will take around 2 weeks to get together. To complete all of the documentation will take around 3 weeks when doing it in detail and making sure it is all accurate. The documentary to film will take around 2-3 days. One day to do the interview and possibly 2 to shoot all the locations I want to visit in Manchester city center. I am going to spend the last 2/3 weeks editing and evaluating my factual piece.

BUDGET

Canon XF105 (XF-105) Professional HD Handheld Camcorder – £100 per day – £300 total.

I am using this type of camera because of the fact it is hand held and also has a built in microphone to pick up audio which is necessary for my interview process.

 ASTRA 1×1 EP Bi-Color panel  – £60 per day – £120 total

I am using a  colour panel because I want additional lighting during my interview. This is down too my inspirational analysis. The Fashion related documentary I took inspiration from used lighting and a back drop in their interviews and I want to do the same.

This will be my hypothetical cost for productions.

Production schedule

Here is my production schedule so far. This will be added too throughout the process of making my documentary , however these are the guidelines I am going to try and stick too. It is a crucial part of the planning documentation and would be something you need to do if you was making a documentary professionally.

On the week beginning the 11th of October , I will also record my voice over as well as the editing of the film.

Narrative structure

It is important that I create some sort of structure in terms of what content I want to include in my documentary and at what time it is going to be there . I am going to aim to have my documentary around 3 minutes long and I am going to create a breakdown.

Minute 1

For the first minute of my documentary I want to include various different wall paper shots of fashion stores , clothing and all things fashion related in and around Manchester city center. I am going to aim for 15 -20 establishing and cut away shots. Firstly I am going to film Cathedral street in Manchester due to the variety of designer shops there I think the shops are picturesque and will look good to film . I am going to Capture people walking down Cathedral street and then also get some close ups of the shops in the street. To accompany this will be a voice over and some music , similar to the music used in the documentary I looked at for my analysis inspiration. The voice over will focus on my secondary research based around high end Fashion, it will include facts and statistics about the fashion industry . The potential shops I can film will be Zara , Burberry , Michael Kors. I am also going to film inside Selfridges which is a huge retail outlet full of designer stores which will give me a variety of shots I can look at.

Minute 2

The second minute will mainly be focusing on my interview. I am interviewing a friend who owns his own fashion company buying and selling merchandise. He has a warehouse in Bolton which I will be able to film in . I am going to take over the shoulder shots of him working , his clothing and other items that he stocks an sells in his warehouse and then ask him some questions in relation to his business . I want to know how it all began and how his company actually works. I also want to get a feel of how difficult it may be working in the Fashion industry and being such a small business. It will also be interesting to know where he wants to be and his outcome. To accompany the close up shots of his sketches and garments will again be a voice over discussing who he is and what he is doing followed by the music used in the first 60 seconds.

Minute 3

The final minute is going to focus again on fast fashion discussing how the fashion industry has established and how it can be daunting potentially getting your foot in the door with the industry at first. Again this will all be voice over consisting of elements from my secondary research , all accompanied by quick cut away shots of fashion stores in the UK. I am going to aim for around 15-20 again. Throughout the footage I want the voice over to of course be relevant and fitting the footage shown on screen.

I am now going to conduct some primary research and ask my audience what they think in terms of how my documentary is laid out. I want to know their first initial thoughts on my documentary and if they would do it any differently so I can make some amendments if they are needed.

analysis of inspirations

As part of my planning It is important that I look into other documentaries that are similar to my own and analyse them in order to apply my knowledge when creating my factual piece. I have come across a recent documentary set within the Salford offices of Greater Manchester. The documentary is called Breaking Fashion. It is focusing on one of Britain’s youngest fast fashion companies hitting the critical summer season. They are focusing on attempting to release a new collection every 2 weeks and out sprint their competitors. This is an expository and observatory style documentary which employ voice overs , wall paper shots , cutaways and interviews but also observing someones life and brand. I am going to look at someone with their own company but on a smaller scale than this to try and make a contrast as to what it is like working in a small business amongst others.

Here is the opening title page to the documentary followed by a voice over and some snippets of interviews from the designer and people working for the company. Straight away the audience is given an insight as to how stressful the fashion industry can be and also what is to come through out the series. From looking at this title page I can see the view of Manchester which is where I am going to be filming the majority of my shots. This has given me some inspiration in getting a sky light shot of Manchester for my documentary.

I could also take moving shots of public transport in Manchester similarly to this to add at the beginning of the documentary. These types of shots in the documentary are accompanied by music which I am going to use when creating my factual piece. The music is quite up beat and creates the tone of being busy , under pressure and having a lot of things to get done.

Here is an example of interview taking place in this documentary. It is clear that a lot of lighting is being used and also a back drop as well. I like the way this is done as I feel that it ties in to a fashion themed documentary with vibrant colors and lighting. The interviews do not last long but they are constant throughout the documentary in small snippets a long side images of Manchester , the warehouse for their brand , places they visit for working purposes. These are all things I want to include in my fashion documentary.

I would like my interviews to have bright lighting , and possibly a back drop however I want them to be more off camera rather than looking directly at the audience. This comes across more factual and appears to be natural and spontaneous. This is a very traditional documentary style.

I am also going to include a range of establishing shots at the beginning of the documentary and also when visiting the warehouse. This way the audience knows where they are as I move to a location and it officially sets the scene of where all the work takes place.

I am planning on getting some close up shots similar to this of any garments that could potentially be at the warehouse I am going to film.

Here are some shots of clothing brands warehouses that are based in and around Manchester.

These are places I could potentially go and visit to take photographs and shots of them. It will be good to compare these warehouses with the warehouse in Bolton I am going to visit because it will show that they are one day his aspirations too and this relates back to what I want the audience to take from my documentary. I want them to know that you can make it in the fashion industry although it is hard.

My chosen platform

Once my factual program is finished , It needs to be uploaded onto a chosen social media platform. The platform I am going to use is Instagram. Instagram has the highest average engagement rate out of all the main social platforms above twitter , and also Facebook. Instagram is also centered on story telling. Telling an interesting story is a great way to connect with your audience. I am going to be looking into careers in fashion and telling a short story of someone who is running their own small business within retail. Visual messages and Instagram together , are a perfect way of letting people know exactly what you are about and what you have to offer with your audience. Since Instagram beats Facebook and Twitter with the highest engagement rate , I think this will be the perfect platform to upload my documentary.

Five years after Instagram launched videos them self , they introduced a new future called IGTV. They re envisioned mobile video through using a new stand alone surface that allows people to watch longer videos in a vertical format , on the go. I am going to be filming my documentary portrait instead of landscape to ensure that it fits in with the way IGTV works. These days , people watch less TV and more digital video. By 2021 mobile video will account for 78% of mobile data traffic. IGTV is built for how people actually use their phone which is vertical and upright. Longer , vertical videos on Instagram make it a lot easier for people to engage with an audience. I want people to feel inspired to get their foot in the door in the fashion industry through watching my documentary.

Uploading my documentary in this format gives me a whole other opportunity to share the content I create to a larger more engaged audience. It is also very easy and there will be no interruptions. Instagram has definitely upped their game in terms of keeping up with competition and now that IGTV has been set up , I think that it will be a definite competitor. Studies have also shown that online video viewership is steadily increasing, with a projected number surpassing 236 million in 2020. — this means that IGTV can go a long way in helping businesses extend their social media and video marketing effort and reach. IGTV combines the power of youtube and instagram into one. Instagram is an excellent platform that has no signs of slowing down

In terms of setting up IGTV , I need to download a new app in order to get started but the IGTV app links up perfectly with Instagram so that uploads are seamless are free from hassle. Once making the film , it is as simple as uploading onto the app for your audience to see when they follow you. Right now , Instagram is the biggest and best platform around , so if I want to get the maximum engagement that I want , this is the best and option and is what I think will be the most successful.

Here are some examples of Brands that have used IGTV and here is the typical set up for somebody speaking to the Camera , therefor I wont be filming my interview in the standard way that they are usually filmed.

Too confirm that Instagram is a suitable platform to use , I sent out a quick survey to my target audience. I asked the question what social media platform is your favorite out of Instagram , twitter , Facebook and tumblr. 100% of the people that I asked said Instagram was their favourite. 100% of the people all agreed that Instagram is the most suitable platform to upload my factual programme.

This has now confirmed for me that Instagram is the most suitable platform for me.
